Nurses typically accessed the exchange if a patient mentioned recent hospital visits during triage, although later access also occurred. The medical assistant or nurse printed information from the exchange so nurse practitioners or physicians could review it. We also applied the workflow elements framework to the nurse-based workflow pattern .
