Characterization

There is a lot of characterization in the beginning of the book  where Ponyboy is explaining everything about his brother

Sunsets

Ponyboy seems to be quite fond of sunsets

"Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different. We saw the same sunset."

He is total saying that everyone is the same. No matter who we fight and how much money we have, we are not so different

He's using sunsets as a symbol to unite both the Socs and Greasers

Classism

Greasers are the low class and Socs are the high class

The Socs look down on the Greasers, hence all the mugging

This book shows us the lives of the lower class and how a simple perspective can change your view

Greasy, long hair

This is a symbol of pride for Greasers  as it what people recognize them as

"How'd you like that haircut to begin just below the chin?"

Ponyboy's life was at stake when some Socs were threatening chop his hair and indiscretly his neck as well

This well describes how their hair is as valuable as there neck
